WHO ARE WE? St George’s Computer & Resource Centre was opened to help the local community learn about computers or to enhance their computer skills. The centre has 10 PCs, all with Windows XP and Microsoft Office.

WHAT HAVE WE GOT? SCRC has broadband internet access and members can also use programs such as Mavis Beacon's Typing Tutor.

St Georges Computer & Resource Centre WHAT CAN WE OFFER? We have training manuals and worksheets – you can learn at your own pace in a relaxed, friendly environment. The Centre is staffed by a team of experienced volunteers who are always on hand to offer advice and guidance on computer use.

The Resource Centre is run by the members and volunteers, with support as necessary from its sponsors Amicus Horizon (a registered social housing landlord).

We want our learners to gain confidence, bringing them to a position where they will want to seek further advice and guidance to pursue further training and gain qualifications. Our aim is to help the local community to help themselves. Sheppey is an area of deprivation, but has vibrant and active communities.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Annual membership is just £4, computer use is 30p per hour, printing and photocopying is extra.

WHEN ARE WE OPEN? Tuesday - Thursday 9am - 5pm.

ABOUT SHEERNESS: Sheerness (population c 11,000) can be found on the Isle of Sheppey (population c 35,000), an island in the Thames Estuary, off the North Kent coast, connected to the UK mainland by a lifting road/rail bridge. Despite its location in the South East of England, which is generally regarded as prosperous, Sheppey is subject to deprivation. Whilst there are pockets of relative affluence, Sheppey on the whole suffers from high unemployment, poor health, below average educational performance and other social problems.

However, this site is not designed to dwell on the problems, but to celebrate the strong communities on the island, strengthen the links between them and to reach out to other communities. Our aim is to build on Sheerness' many attributes and strengths. We want to see Sheerness strong and competitive, with a commitment to lifetime learning and skills development for members of the community regardless of their status.

We aim to ensure that all individuals living on Sheppey have the opportunity to obtain qualifications, skills and employment to equip them into the new millenium, and give them the means by which they can enhance the quality of their lives. It is also our wish to provide a resource to local community groups to provide information, guidance, support and share expertise.

About this site

This site was originally setup as a community project to teach web design. Although a lot of work was put into the site it was never quite finished and was mothballed for two years.
This version is a rewrite of the original, the layout and design is different but the content is the same barring minor editing. The original team were:

Paul Grover, course tutor
Melvyn Ingram
Greg
Leona McCord
Dave Stock
Steve Crowder
Aimo, graphic design
Simon Hill, centre manager.

This version was written and designed by Wayne Abela. The site will be maintained as a project run by the SCRC.
