Location, travel and transport

The Isle of Sheppey is situated at the mouth of the River Thames in the county of Kent. Some fifty miles South East of London, at 31 sq miles and with a population of 36,000 it is one of the largest islands in the United Kingdom. Here you can find all you need to know about how to get in, out and around the island.

Public Transport

Train

There is a regular train service every half an hour from Sittingbourne to Sheerness via Queenborough. For more information on train schedules and prices, please ring Connex at 01795-123456 or try the on-line timetable on National Rail.

Bus

Friendly service by Arriva reaching most of the Island, Sittingbourne, Canterbury and Medway. Telephone 01795 123456 for schedule and other details or check their website: Arriva.

Car

Definitely the best way to get around the island. All the roads are generally in good condition and the majority of them are paved. Slow down for the horses and keep an eye out for the ducks around the Minster area and Tesco.

Taxi

Island Taxi's offer both cars and minibuses. The main taxi depot is at the railway station. Ring them free on 0800 666 321.

By air

Closest airport is in Rochester, for international connections fly in or from Gatwick, Heathrow or Stansted airports. Click on each link for the airport websites.

By water

There are several places to get to by water and we are only just over 7 miles away from Southend, Essex. There are also favourite spots for windsurfing, jetskiing and a recreational lake for pedalboats. More information on watersports can be found on the Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club website.

By foot

If you like to stroll along the coastline and fields, go for it! If you are an enthusiast, there is an annual walk around the island. However, it seems that the main walks would be the ones taken to the local store. There are also several cycle paths around Sheppey for cycle enthusiasts.
